Results from a step wise progression of strokes and cerebrovascular disease that may be localized (focal) or global (generalized) with motor weakness or paralysis, sleep-wake disturbances, swallowing and speech disturbance, aphasia.  The risk factors include hypertension, head trauma, interruptions of cardiac input, blood vessel disorder.
